Nissan recalls Infiniti G35 sedans, coupes - Recall affects as many as 134,000 cars for airbag problems

updated 8:44 a.m. CT, Tues., May 4, 2010
DETROIT - Nissan Motor Co recalled Infiniti G35 sedans and coupes affecting as many as 134,000 cars due to a connector that could cause airbags not to deploy during a crash, U.S. regulators said on Tuesday. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said as many as 134,215 Infiniti G35 sedans from model years 2005-2006 and G35 coupes from model years 2005-2007 are subject to the recall. About 65 percent of the vehicles recalled are sedans and about 35 percent coupes, a Nissan spokesman said. The affected models were made at a Nissan plant in Japan. Both the sedan and coupe are of the previous generation of G35s.

Nissan spokesman Colin Price said no injuries or accidents have been reported. NHTSA said a wire harness for the airbags may wear down to the point that it could interrupt a signal to deploy the airbags in the event of a crash. Most of the vehicles involved are in the United States, but cars are also recalled in South Korea, Canada, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Guam and the Middle East, Price said. Price said that a red warning light will be displayed on the dashboard when the connection is disrupted to signal the airbag to deploy. He said drivers should take their cars to an Infiniti dealer at that point. For cars where the red airbag signal is not lit, consumers will be notified soon by Nissan and Infiniti when to bring their cars in for service, Price said.

Nissan informed federal officials of the potential problem two weeks ago, NHTSA reports show.

I guess I'll wait until I get a letter from Infiniti letting me know when to bring my car in.

I have a friend who is a mechanic at Infiniti and he actually looked up all the recalls that have been done on my car, I have only had the following done that I would consider major, but he did mention others that were minor.

Airbags (Done)
Fuel shutter valve (Done)
Seat Belts (I need to take it in and have them replaced b/c they don't retract no more, don't know how many people know this but I thought this was interesting. Infiniti offers a Lifetime warranty on seat belts for most cars, so if they don't retract no more then they will replace them for free.)

Oh and I believe he did mention to me that the 04 model has a recall on the headlights, only it is no listed on any sites this is something you have to take in and ask about.

Got my recall notice in the mail today for the passenger seat airbag.  Wonder if they'll give me a loaner for the day??

I had no idea Infiniti could replace the seatbelts.  This is a good thing since my driver side is starting to get lose.

Since I've owned my 2004.5 I've not taken it in for any recall.  I've not had any problems with my headlight even after upgrading to 8K HID's.  My seatbelt still retracts pretty well.

Took my car to the dealer today for the passenger seat recall.  They gave me an 08 G35 loaner and I hate it.  Grabby brakes, loose steering, and just as many rattles as my car and the thing only has 20,000 miles.

At least it's free!
